Hiking in Triglav Alps

Who knew there were Alps in Slovenia? I had no idea the Alps came down to Slovenia and were so beautiful. The Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park is very close to Bled.

With mountains, lakes and gorges, it is a breathtakingly beautiful place to explore.

We first hiked the Vintgar Gorge, a mile long gorge carved by the Radovna River. The boardwalks along the river made for perfect viewing and great photography no matter the weather. Crystal clear water, small waterfalls and rushing water – spring mountain run-offs here must be incredible. At the end of the trail is a beautiful waterfall. While we were there, a man and his wife came up. He stripped down and walked into the water! Not swimming weather for us but it must have been a goal for him because he was pleased with his accomplishment. After the gorge as the hike continued we were joined by about 30 cows being herded to a new location by a family of 2 parents and 3 young children. Definitely a family affair.

We knew they were coming before we saw them because all of the cowbells were clanking!

Our second hike was at the Mostnica Gorge in Bohinj. We had a nice walk through the old town to get to the river. Little huts and cows dotted the landscape. The hike along this gorge was mostly above the river rather than along side. It was amazing to see how the river carved the walls over probably many thousands of years. The deep narrow gorge had lots of swirling pools and interesting rock formations.
