Island Time - Santorini

Updated: Nov 6, 2021

After about a month on

the road, we needed some time to decompress so we hopped on a ferry from Athens to Santorini. Great trip with 5 minute stops at Naxos, Paros and Mykonos islands on the way to paradise! We had a great ‘cave’ hotel room in Oia on the northern tip of the island.

We got our exercise going anywhere because there were 126 steps down from the main walkway through town to our little cave.

Beautiful location perched over the edge of the volcanic bay. Mostly we just relaxed in the hot tub, drank local wine and ate cheese.

We did take a beautiful sail around the island with stops to swim in crystal clear water and have a Mediterranean seafood lunch onboard. Having rented a car for the day we did some exploring. At the opposite end of the island from Oia, we found an old lighthouse along with tiny churches in several local villages. Also discovered the true Blacks Beach – black volcanic sand but otherwise identical to the La Jolla beach.

Had a fabulous hike along the spine of the island from Oia, at the northern end of the island, up past Imervigli, and on to Fiera. Beautiful views down cliffs to the sea. The morning light was perfect for photography and Betsey got many great shots of the blue domes and white caves with the beautiful water in the background. In Oia, many professional photographers were out taking photos of women in their iconic blowing dresses.

A highlight was the food – fresh seafood of course. We hiked down to the harbor where the local fishermen come in and sat on the waterfront restaurants for dinner – go in the kitchen and pick your whole fish out for dinner.
